Category: Domain: Optical Transport, Vendor: Ericsson

Description: Monitors optical transceiver (SFP/XFP/QSFP) DOM parameters such as optical power, temperature, and bias current.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ERICSSON-ROUTER-OPTICAL-TRANSCEIVER-MIB?

ERICSSON-ROUTER-OPTICAL-TRANSCEIVER-MIB is an Ericsson vendor MIB for the SmartEdge/SSR family of routers, providing digital optical monitoring (DOM) data for pluggable optical transceivers (SFP/XFP/QSFP) installed in line-card ports. It exposes a per-transceiver table keyed by card slot and port that reports transceiver type, media type, wavelength/frequency, serial number, CLEI code, and whether Ericsson-approved diagnostics monitoring is available. This is squarely a hardware-health MIB: it lets an admin confirm optical module identity/compatibility and, where diagnostic monitoring is enabled, watch for degraded optical conditions (implicitly optical power, temperature, and bias current per its short description) that presage link failures. It depends on the router's entity/physical-slot model to locate each transceiver by card slot and port, complementing standard ENTITY-MIB and IF-MIB data. It is deployed on Ericsson SmartEdge/SM/SSR routers wherever pluggable optics are used on line-card interfaces, especially in service-provider optical transport and edge-routing roles. Engineers can download the ERICSSON-ROUTER-OPTICAL-TRANSCEIVER-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ERICSSON-ROUTER-OPTICAL-TRANSCEIVER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ericsson SmartEdge/SM/SSR routers with pluggable optical transceivers

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll eriRouterOpticalTransceiverPortTable/eriRouterOpticalTransceiverPortEntry indexed by eriRouterOpticalTransceiverCardSlot and eriRouterOpticalTransceiverPort to identify each installed module's eriRouterOpticalTransceiverType, eriRouterOpticalTransceiverSerialNo, and eriRouterOpticalTransceiverWaveLength. Checking eriRouterOpticalTransceiverEriRouterEricssonApproved would flag use of a non-approved/third-party optic, while eriRouterOpticalTransceiverDiagMonitoring indicates whether that port's module supports real-time DOM telemetry for detecting optical power or temperature degradation.

What Can Be Monitored

  • transceiver type and media type
  • wavelength/frequency
  • serial number and CLEI code
  • Ericsson-approved status
  • diagnostic monitoring availability
  • card slot/port location

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using eriRouterOpticalTransceiverActiveAlarmCount OID:

Select an Ericsson SmartEdge/SM/SSR router (Redback Networks heritage) with pluggable optical transceiver (SFP/XFP/QSFP DOM) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type eriRouterOpticalTransceiverActiveAlarmCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of alarms active on the Optical Transceiver. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the count changes from its expected baseline, since that would indicate the underlying set of items changed unexpectedly. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
