Description: Enterasys Networks Port Web Authentication (PWA) MIB for browser-based user authentication at the network edge.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ENTERASYS-PWA-MIB?

This Enterasys Networks enterprise MIB configures and monitors Port Web Authentication (PWA), a captive-portal-style mechanism that authenticates a user via a browser before granting general network access on a switch port. It exposes global authentication-control settings (hostname, banner, name-service, protocol, domain, IP addressing) as well as per-port authentication configuration and status objects. Its monitoring value centers on the operational/software status of the authentication service and individual ports: per-port PWA status objects reveal whether a port is currently in the unauthenticated (restricted) or authenticated (open) state, useful for troubleshooting why an end-station cannot reach the network. It is a standalone enterprise MIB, not layered on a standard IETF authentication MIB, though it interoperates conceptually with RADIUS-based back-end authentication. It is deployed on Enterasys edge switches that enforce web-based authentication for guest or unmanaged endpoint onboarding, and administrators can download the ENTERASYS-PWA-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ENTERASYS-PWA-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Enterasys edge switch

Monitoring Examples

A helpdesk technician troubleshooting a user who can't get online would check etsysPwaPortStatus for the specific switch port to confirm whether the port is stuck in the unauthenticated state, then verify etsysPwaSystemAuthControl is globally enabled and etsysPwaSystemAuthIPAddress/etsysPwaSystemAuthProtocol point to a reachable authentication server. etsysPwaPortConfiguration objects would be checked to confirm per-port PWA enablement matches policy.

What Can Be Monitored

  • global PWA authentication control state
  • per-port authentication status
  • authentication server address/protocol configuration
  • authentication banner/hostname configuration
  • PWA enhanced mode status

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using etsysPwaAuthSessionOctetsRx OID:

Select an Enterasys Networks switch (legacy, later Extreme Networks) (Port Web Authentication captive portal) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type etsysPwaAuthSessionOctetsRx into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of octets received in user data frames on this ifIndex during the session. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
