Category: Vendor: Enterasys/Cabletron

Description: An Enterasys Networks extension of the IETF IF-MIB, adding interface control objects along with operational status cause codes.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ENTERASYS-IF-MIB-EXT-MIB?

This is an Enterasys Networks enterprise MIB that extends the standard IETF IF-MIB with additional interface-status detail for Enterasys switches and routers. It adds objects such as a system-wide flag for logging operational-state link changes and a per-interface extension table that records a specific operational-status 'cause code' alongside the standard interface index. It is used to monitor interface hardware/link health beyond simple up/down state, explaining why an interface's operational status changed, e.g. administratively down, fault detected, or link-negotiation failure, which is valuable for quickly diagnosing physical-layer or port-hardware problems. It is explicitly built as an extension of, and therefore directly dependent on, the standard IETF IF-MIB. It is deployed on Enterasys (later Extreme Networks) managed switches and routers, where operators correlate ifOperStatus changes from IF-MIB with the extended cause-code data here to pinpoint root causes of port outages. Engineers can download the ENTERASYS-IF-MIB-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ENTERASYS-IF-MIB-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Enterasys/Extreme Networks managed switch or router

Monitoring Examples

An operator monitors etsysInterfaceExtTable/etsysInterfaceExtEntry rows to read etsysIfOperStatusCause for a given interface, which explains the reason behind the last operational-status transition as flagged system-wide via etsysIfOperStateLinkChange. If a port frequently flaps and etsysIfOperStatusCause reports a hardware or signal-related cause each time, this points to a failing transceiver or cabling issue rather than a configuration problem, which a plain IF-MIB poll would not reveal on its own.

What Can Be Monitored

  • interface operational status cause
  • link-state change events
  • per-interface fault reason

RFC description

Enterasys Networks extension to the IETF IF-MIB providing operational status cause codes and interface control objects.

Start monitoring Enterasys Networks switch (legacy, later Extreme Networks)/router (IF-MIB extensions, operational-status cause codes) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
