What Is E5-121-MIB?
E5-121-MIB is Calix's vendor-specific management MIB for the E5-121 multi-service access platform, part of the E5 family of broadband access nodes that deliver combined voice, data, and video services to subscribers over copper and fiber. It exposes VoIP media-gateway control data -- H.248/Megaco media gateway configuration, name, port assignment, enable state, and row status -- alongside MAC-layer forwarding filter statistics for the platform's Ethernet switching path. E5-121-MIB SNMP monitoring is used to check the operational status of VoIP media gateways (whether a configured gateway is registered and active), confirm gateway configuration parameters are correctly provisioned, and track MAC forwarding/filtering activity as an indicator of switching-plane health alongside general system status such as uptime and interface state. It builds on Calix's common platform MIB conventions and the H.248/Megaco protocol model used for media gateway control, complementing other E-series MIBs covering chassis and line-level status. It is deployed by broadband/telecom carriers on E5-121 access nodes at the network edge, typically polled by an EMS/NMS to verify subscriber voice service and switching health.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in E5-121-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
What Can Be Monitored
- VoIP media gateway (H.248) operational status
- media gateway configuration and enable state
- media gateway port and profile assignment
- media gateway entry row/administrative status
- MAC forwarding/filtering statistics
Supported Devices
- Calix E5-121 multi-service access platform
Monitoring Examples
An operator polls voipH248StatusTable/voipH248StatusEntry, using VoipH248StatusMgName to identify a specific media gateway and VoipH248StatusMgStatus to confirm it is currently registered and operational. Configuration is checked via voipH248MgConfTable/voipH248MgConfEntry, where voipH248MgName, voipH248MgEnable, voipH248MgH248Profile, and voipH248MgPort define which gateway profile and port a media gateway instance uses, with voipH248MgRowStatus confirming the entry is active. A media gateway showing voipH248MgEnable set to true but VoipH248StatusMgStatus reporting an inactive or down state would flag a VoIP service disruption worth investigating. Separately, macffStats would be checked to review MAC forwarding/filtering counters as a general indicator of Ethernet switching-plane activity on the unit.

FAQ
What does E5-121-MIB provide for monitoring a Calix E5-121 access platform?
It's the core management MIB for the Calix E5-121 multi-service access platform, covering system-level configuration and status. It gives operators a way to check overall platform configuration and health via SNMP rather than only through the device's local management interface.
Why would a NOC poll E5-121-MIB rather than only checking standard MIB-II objects on a Calix E5-121?
Because MIB-II only reports generic interface counters, whereas E5-121-MIB exposes system-level configuration and status specific to the E5-121 multi-service access platform, giving visibility into the platform's own management state that generic MIBs don't capture.
