Category: Domain: CATV/Cable, Standard: DOCSIS

Description: Defines SNMP trap notifications for cable modem and CMTS device events in DOCSIS networks.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DOCS-CABLE-DEVICE-TRAP-MIB?

DOCS-CABLE-DEVICE-TRAP-MIB is a Cisco-authored extension to the IETF standards-track DOCS-CABLE-DEVICE-MIB (RFC 2669) that defines SNMP trap notifications for DOCSIS cable modems (CMs) and cable modem termination systems (CMTSes). Two BITS-valued control objects, docsDevCmTrapControl and docsDevCmtsTrapControl, let an operator selectively enable individual traps such as unknown-TLV detection, dynamic-service request/response/acknowledgement failures, BPI/BPKM security failures, dynamic security-association failures, DHCP and time-of-day server failures, software-upgrade lifecycle events, and dynamic channel change (DCC) failures. Every CM trap carries a common object set (docsDevEvLevel, docsDevEvId, docsDevEvText, docsIfDocsisCapability, docsIfDocsisOperMode, ifPhysAddress, docsIfCmCmtsAddress) drawn from the cable modem's event log, while CMTS-side traps instead carry docsIfCmtsCmStatusDocsisMode and docsIfCmtsCmStatusMacAddress identifying the specific CM involved. As a pure notification/event MIB it depends entirely on DOCS-CABLE-DEVICE-MIB, DOCS-IF-MIB, and DOCS-IF-EXT-MIB for its underlying event log and DOCSIS status objects, and it is deployed on DOCSIS cable modems and CMTS platforms in cable broadband networks; the DOCS-CABLE-DEVICE-TRAP-MIB reference documents which traps to enable to catch registration, security, and software-upgrade failures as they happen.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DOCS-CABLE-DEVICE-TRAP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based extension MIB (built on RFC 2669), deployed on Cisco DOCSIS CMTS and cable modem platforms

Monitoring Examples

An operator enables the relevant bits in docsDevCmtsTrapControl and subscribes to docsDevCmtsInitRegReqFailTrap and docsDevCmtsDynServReqFailTrap on a CMTS; a burst of these registration/dynamic-service failure traps tied to one docsIfCmtsCmStatusMacAddress would indicate a specific cable modem struggling to register or requesting services the CMTS is rejecting.

What Can Be Monitored

  • CM/CMTS trap enable bitmasks
  • registration request/response/acknowledgement failures
  • BPI/BPKM security initialization failures
  • dynamic service and dynamic channel change failures
  • DHCP/time-of-day server failures
  • software upgrade lifecycle failures
