What Is DOCS-L2VPN-MIB?

This is a CableLabs/IETF-derived standards MIB that manages DOCSIS Layer 2 VPN (L2VPN) services, which provide private, isolated Ethernet connectivity for business or MSO customers over a shared hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) cable network. It exposes configuration and identity-mapping data linking cable modems to specific L2VPN service instances, along with cable modem L2VPN compliance and filtering capability indicators. From a monitoring standpoint it primarily supports confirming L2VPN service configuration correctness (that a given cable modem is correctly mapped to its intended VPN identifier) rather than raw performance counters, though a mismatch here would manifest as a customer's L2VPN traffic being misdelivered or dropped. It depends on and extends the base DOCSIS interface and cable modem MIB framework used across DOCS-IF3-MIB and related DOCSIS standards. It is deployed on CMTS and cable modem equipment in cable operator networks offering business Ethernet/L2VPN services. Engineers can download the DOCS-L2VPN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DOCS-L2VPN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using docsL2vpnVpnCmStatsUpstreamPkts OID:

Select a DOCSIS cable modem/CMT (Layer 2 VPN, vendor-neutral CableLabs standard) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type docsL2vpnVpnCmStatsUpstreamPkts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of L2vpn-forwarded packets received from this instance's Cable Modem on this instance's L2VPN. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
