Description: Digital Equipment Corporation vendor MIB extending FDDI, MIB-II system and interfaces, and bridge objects for DEC ELMS-managed FDDI concentrator and bridge devices

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DEC-ElanConc?

DEC-ElanConc is a vendor-specific MIB from Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) for its FDDI-based ELMS-managed concentrator and bridge products, part of DEC's legacy enterprise networking line. It extends standard MIB-II, FDDI, and transparent bridge object groups with DEC private enterprise objects to describe device identity and management structure. As a chassis/interface management MIB it is used to monitor hardware and software status such as device uptime, interface/port operational state, and FDDI ring/bridge health rather than exposing rich sensor telemetry. It depends heavily on the IETF MIB-II (RFC 1213), FDDI SMT, and Bridge MIB standards, layering DEC's private enterprise subtree on top of them. It would typically be deployed on legacy DEC FDDI concentrators and bridges in older enterprise backbone networks that are increasingly rare but may still appear in maintained legacy environments. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the DEC-ElanConc file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DEC-ElanConc. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • DEC FDDI concentrator
  • DEC FDDI/Ethernet bridge

Monitoring Examples

Because the visible object tree here is limited to the generic mgmt/mib-2/private/enterprises nodes, a monitoring system would walk the standard ifTable/ifEntry (from MIB-II) alongside DEC's private enterprise branch to get per-port operational status and FDDI ring state for each concentrator port. An admin polling ifOperStatus and ifAdminStatus for each interface entry could detect a port that has dropped out of the FDDI ring, while walking the private subtree would reveal any DEC-specific alarm or configuration objects for the concentrator. This is representative of a bridge/concentrator health check pattern common to 1990s-era DEC FDDI gear.

What Can Be Monitored

  • interface operational status
  • FDDI ring membership
  • bridge port state
  • device identification (sysObjectID)
  • system uptime
