Category: Hardware and Environment, Optical and WDM, Vendor: Ciena

Description: Manages fan tray status and environmental monitoring for Cyan optical networking equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CYAN-FAN-MIB?

This is a vendor-specific MIB from Cyan (an optical networking equipment maker, later part of Ciena) covering the fan tray modules in its optical transport chassis. It exposes inventory and status data for each fan unit, including identifiers, asset tags, MAC addresses, and administrative/alarm state, organized in the cyanFanTable indexed by shelf and fan ID. Its central monitoring use is hardware health: the admin state, alarm LED, and hot-swap LED fields directly indicate whether a given fan is running normally, has failed, has been pulled, or is newly inserted and still in its soak-in period, which is critical for catching cooling failures before they cause thermal shutdowns. It is a self-contained proprietary MIB that likely coexists with sibling Cyan hardware-inventory MIBs for shelves and cards. It is deployed in carrier and enterprise optical transport equipment where continuous fan operation is essential to prevent overheating of high-density optical/electrical cards. Engineers can download the CYAN-FAN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CYAN-FAN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cyan optical transport chassis
  • Cyan/Ciena packet-optical networking equipment

Monitoring Examples

A monitoring system walks cyanFanTable/cyanFanEntry, keyed by cyanFanShelfId and cyanFanFanId, and checks cyanFanAdminState and cyanFanAlarmLed to detect a fan tray that has gone from in-service to faulted, triggering an alert before shelf temperatures rise. The cyanFanHotSwapLed field confirms a technician safely removed and reseated a fan module, while cyanFanAutoinserviceSoakTimeSec shows how long a newly inserted fan is still being verified before being trusted. cyanFanAssetTag, cyanFanBaseMacAddress, and cyanFanDescription/cyanFanIdentifier let inventory tools reconcile the physical fan unit against asset records.

What Can Be Monitored

  • fan admin/operational state
  • fan alarm LED status
  • hot-swap LED state
  • fan soak-in time after insertion
  • fan asset tag/inventory identifiers
