Category: Quality of Service, Vendor: Cabletron/Enterasys
Description: Configures Cabletron traffic rate policing policies including committed information rate and burst size limits.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CTRON-RATE-POLICING-MIB?
CTRON-RATE-POLICING-MIB, also known as the Enterasys Rate Policing MIB, lets administrators set maximum ingress traffic rates on a per-port, per-priority basis on Enterasys/Cabletron switching hardware. It exposes a rate-policing configuration table (ctRatePolicingConfigTable/Entry) with per-resource threshold, priority-list, and allowed-action objects (ctRatePolicingThreshHold, ctRatePolicingThreshHoldMin, ctRatePolicingPriorityList, ctRatePolicingActionsAllowed), plus a global admin-status and config-last-change object. Its monitoring value lies in software-level traffic-policing status - whether rate limiting is enabled, what action was actually taken when a threshold was exceeded (ctRatePolicingActionsTaken), and when the policy configuration last changed - which helps confirm QoS/rate-limiting policy is enforcing as intended. It is a standalone Enterasys-specific MIB with no explicit dependency on other MIBs mentioned in its module description. It is deployed on Enterasys/Cabletron switches where administrators enforce committed-rate/burst limits on specific ports or priority queues to prevent traffic abuse or ensure QoS fairness. Engineers can download the CTRON-RATE-POLICING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTRON-RATE-POLICING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Enterasys/Cabletron network switch
Monitoring Examples
An admin would poll ctRatePolicingAdminStatus to confirm rate policing is globally enabled, then check ctRatePolicingConfigTable/Entry indexed by ctRatePolicingResourceIndex to compare ctRatePolicingThreshHold against actual traffic, using ctRatePolicingActionsTaken to see if the configured action (e.g. drop, remark) actually fired on a given port/priority. ctRatePolicingConfigLastChange would be checked to confirm no unauthorized or unexpected policy change occurred recently. ctRatePolicingPriorityList shows which traffic priorities the rule applies to on that port.
What Can Be Monitored
- rate policing admin status
- per-port/priority rate threshold
- actions taken on rate violation
- configuration last-change time
