What Is CTRON-IP-ROUTER-MIB?

CTRON-IP-ROUTER-MIB is a Cabletron Systems (now part of Enterasys/Extreme Networks) proprietary module for managing IP routing configuration and behavior on Cabletron routing devices, covering router-level identity, administrative/operational status, and IP forwarding statistics. It exposes both configuration and performance data: a router ID, system admin/operational status and reset controls, an operational-time (uptime-like) counter, IP MIB revision/version text, and separate forwarding-control objects with their own admin status, reset, operational time, and inbound packet counters. Its monitoring value spans both software/service status and traffic performance: administrators check nwIpSysOperStatus against nwIpSysAdminStatus to confirm the IP routing subsystem is actually running as configured, use nwIpSysOperationalTime as an uptime-style health indicator, and monitor nwIpFwdCtrInPkts for forwarding throughput or to detect a forwarding engine that has stopped counting packets. It builds on standard IP MIB (RFC 1213-style) conventions, as reflected in its IP-focused object naming and version text field. It is deployed on legacy Cabletron IP routers and Layer 3 switches in enterprise networks running Cabletron's networking equipment, and locating the CTRON-IP-ROUTER-MIB OID branch on the router is the starting point for polling these router ID, status, and forwarding-counter objects directly.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would compare nwIpSysAdminStatus to nwIpSysOperStatus to detect a router whose IP forwarding subsystem is administratively enabled but operationally down, and monitor nwIpSysOperationalTime for unexpected resets (a drop to a low value indicates a recent restart, possibly via nwIpSysAdminReset). Watching nwIpFwdCtrInPkts over time reveals whether the forwarding counter subsystem (nwIpFwdCtrAdminStatus/nwIpFwdCtrOperationalTime) is actively counting traffic; a counter that stops incrementing while admin status remains enabled points to a stalled forwarding engine needing a reset.
