Category: Vendor: Cabletron/Enterasys

Description: Manages Cabletron INB2 second-generation internal network bus parameters, arbitration, and throughput monitoring.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CTINB2-MIB?

CTINB2-MIB is a Cabletron Systems vendor-specific MIB (from the CTRON-MIB-NAMES enterprise tree) that models utilization of a chassis's second-generation Internal Network Bus (INB2), the internal backplane channel used to move traffic between modules in a Cabletron chassis. Its single ctInbUtilTable is indexed by ctInbUtilSrcSlot and ctInbUtilDestSlot and reports, for each source/destination module pair, 64-bit byte counts split into high/low 32-bit halves for both INB channels A and B (ctInbUtilHiByteCountA/B, ctInbUtilLoByteCountA/B) along with pre-computed absolute utilization percentages (ctInbUtilAbsoluteA, ctInbUtilAbsoluteB, ctInbUtilAbsoluteTotal), scaled by 100 for precision. A single read-write scalar, ctInbUtilInterval, controls the sampling interval used for all of these calculations. Unlike what the hint description implies, the MIB as written contains no bus-arbitration objects - it is purely a backplane-throughput/utilization MIB, useful for spotting a chassis backplane channel that is saturated or a module-to-module path carrying disproportionate internal traffic. It is deployed on Cabletron multi-slot chassis systems, and administrators can download the CTINB2-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTINB2-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cabletron multi-slot chassis systems (INB2 backplane)

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls ctInbUtilTable for ctInbUtilAbsoluteTotal on a given ctInbUtilSrcSlot/ctInbUtilDestSlot pair, and a value consistently near the scaled maximum would indicate that internal backplane traffic between those two modules is saturating the INB and could be limiting inter-module throughput.

What Can Be Monitored

  • INB channel A/B byte counters (hi/lo)
  • per-slot-pair absolute utilization percentages
  • total INB utilization
  • utilization sampling interval
