Category: ATM

Description: Manages Crescendo Communications (pre-Cisco) ATM and FDDI network switch hardware and port statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CRESCENDO-MIB?

CRESCENDO-MIB is a legacy vendor MIB from Crescendo Communications, a networking company acquired by Cisco in the early 1990s, covering its ATM and FDDI concentrator/switch hardware and management functions. It exposes device management configuration such as the concentrator's management IP address and netmask, SNMP trap receiver configuration, and SNMP community access control settings for the switch's management interface. Its monitoring value is largely around management-plane and network configuration status: verifying the concentrator's IP/netmask configuration is correct, confirming which trap receivers are registered to receive fault notifications, and auditing community strings and their access levels, which together determine whether the device can be properly managed and will alert operators to hardware or link faults. As an early enterprise MIB it predates and does not depend on later IETF standards, relying on its own concMgmtType-rooted structure. It would have been deployed on Crescendo/early-Cisco ATM or FDDI concentrator hardware in legacy campus backbone networks. Engineers can download the CRESCENDO-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CRESCENDO-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Crescendo Communications ATM/FDDI concentrator
  • early Cisco-acquired switch hardware

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would check concIpAddr and concNetMask to confirm the concentrator's management addressing is correctly configured, and walk concTrapReceiverTable/concTrapReceiverEntry to verify the expected NMS station is registered via concTrapReceiverAddr to receive concTrapReceiverType notifications. The concCommunityTable/concCommunityEntry would be audited to ensure concCommunityAccess levels are appropriately restricted, since a misconfigured community with excessive access on this legacy device would be a security concern. This is fundamentally a configuration/management-access MIB rather than one exposing rich runtime port statistics.

What Can Be Monitored

  • management IP/netmask configuration
  • trap receiver registration
  • trap type delivered
  • SNMP community access level
