What Is CENTILLION-SONET-MIB?
CENTILLION-SONET-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Nortel (for its Centillion ATM switch product line) used to manage and monitor SONET/SDH physical-layer interfaces used as ATM transport. It exposes a SONET section-layer table with error counters such as BIP-8 (Bit Interleaved Parity) errors, alongside ATM SONET configuration objects. Its monitoring value is physical-layer hardware/link health: BIP-8 error counts reveal signal degradation, cabling issues, or optical transceiver problems on the SONET line before they escalate into ATM cell loss. It depends on and complements the standard SONET/SDH interface MIB conventions layered under IF-MIB, as well as Nortel's broader ATM configuration MIBs. It is deployed on Nortel Centillion ATM switches carrying SONET/SDH uplinks in carrier or enterprise backbone networks, and network engineers often turn to a CENTILLION-SONET-MIB MIB Browser to load and inspect these objects directly.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CENTILLION-SONET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Nortel Centillion ATM switches
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll cnSonetSectionTable/cnSonetSectionEntry to read cnSonetSectionBip8Errors on a given SONET-carrying interface, watching for a rising error count that signals optical signal degradation or a failing SONET line card. The atmSonetConfig object would be checked to confirm the interface's SONET framing/configuration matches the expected line rate and mode before troubleshooting the BIP-8 error trend further.
What Can Be Monitored
- SONET section BIP-8 error count
- SONET/ATM interface configuration
- physical-layer signal quality
