Category: Vendor: HP/HPE, Wireless and WLAN
Description: Configures syslog server destinations and message filtering for Colubris/HP wireless devices.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is COLUBRIS-SYSLOG-MIB?
This Colubris (HP) MIB configures the access point's syslog behavior - where log messages are sent, at what severity, and with optional regular-expression-based message filtering - and exposes the most recent syslog message as an SNMP-readable object/trap. It is chiefly a configuration MIB (severity thresholds, trap-triggering severity, regex match rules) paired with a small operational component surfacing the latest logged message's facility, severity, and text. Its monitoring value lies in software-level event visibility: rather than raw hardware counters, it lets an NMS learn about arbitrary internal log events (errors, warnings, security messages) as they're generated, which can reveal software faults or configuration problems as they occur. It has no strong technical dependency on other standard MIBs, functioning as a self-contained Colubris syslog-to-SNMP bridge. It's deployed on Colubris/HP access points wherever centralized log monitoring via SNMP is desired. Engineers can download the COLUBRIS-SYSLOG-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in COLUBRIS-SYSLOG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Colubris/HP wireless access point
Monitoring Examples
An admin sets syslogSeverityLevel and syslogTrapSeverityLevel so that only warning-or-higher messages generate SNMP traps, then optionally configures syslogMessageRegEx to trap only on messages matching a specific pattern, such as an authentication failure string. When a trap fires, syslogMsgNumber, syslogMsgFacility, syslogMsgSeverity, and syslogMsgText together identify exactly what event occurred on the AP, letting the admin diagnose a recurring software issue without needing direct console/syslog access.
What Can Be Monitored
- configured syslog severity threshold
- trap-triggering severity level
- message regex filter match
- latest log message text/facility/severity

RFC description
Colubris Networks wireless controller syslog management MIB defining objects for configuring and monitoring syslog logging on Colubris wireless controllers (vendor product-specific).
Start monitoring Colubris/HP wireless access point (legacy) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
