What Is CISCOSB-PHY-MIB?

CISCOSB-PHY-MIB is a Cisco Small Business private MIB used for testing Layer 1 (physical layer/PHY) interfaces on Cisco Small Business switches. It defines objects for configuring and retrieving results of PHY-level diagnostic tests, including test type, status, result, units, and alarm indications. Its monitoring purpose is squarely hardware health: it lets an operator initiate a physical-layer test on a port and read back whether the port's PHY hardware passed or failed, along with any alarm condition and timestamp, directly surfacing cabling or transceiver hardware faults at the physical layer. As a CISCOSB private testing MIB it works alongside the standard IF-MIB and Ethernet-like MIB for everyday interface statistics, adding a diagnostic layer on top. It is deployed on Cisco Small Business switches when technicians need to run built-in cable/PHY diagnostics to troubleshoot suspected physical-layer faults. Engineers can download the CISCOSB-PHY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCOSB-PHY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Small Business switch

Monitoring Examples

A technician would write a test type into rlPhyTestSetTable/rlPhyTestSetType to initiate a PHY diagnostic on a given port, then poll rlPhyTestGetTable objects such as rlPhyTestGetStatus, rlPhyTestGetResult, and rlPhyTestGetAlarm to see the outcome. An rlPhyTestGetAlarm value indicating a fault combined with an abnormal rlPhyTestGetResult would reveal a bad cable segment or failing PHY transceiver on that port. rlPhyTestGetTimeStamp records when the last test was run, useful for correlating results with recent link-flap events.
