Category: Fibre Channel and Storage, Vendor: Cisco Devices

Description: Adds enhanced zone membership and policy objects on top of Cisco's Fibre Channel zone set management.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-ZS-EXT-MIB?

CISCO-ZS-EXT-MIB is a Cisco-specific Fibre Channel storage-area-network MIB that extends the Cisco Zoning Server (ZS) architecture to support the FC-GS4/SW3 T11 specifications for zone management on Cisco MDS-class SAN switches and directors. It exposes configuration and operational data for zone-set capability negotiation, zoning operation modes, and active management-session ownership between switches or management stations. In monitoring terms it is used less for hardware health and more for software/control-plane status: administrators poll it to confirm which zoning capabilities and operation modes a switch supports, whether a requested zoning operation succeeded, and which entity currently owns an active zoning session, all of which indicate the operational health of the fabric's zoning software. It explicitly builds on and extends CISCO-ZS-MIB (the FC-GS3/SW2 zoning MIB), so a management station typically needs both MIBs loaded together. It is deployed in Fibre Channel SAN fabrics built from Cisco MDS switches where multiple switches must agree on zoning behavior across the fabric. Engineers can download the CISCO-ZS-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-ZS-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MDS Fibre Channel SAN switches/directors

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll czseCapabilityTable/czseCapabilityEntry to confirm which zoning capability objects (czseCapabilityObject) a switch advertises, then check czseModeTable's czseOperationMode and czseOperationModeResult to verify a zone-set activation or merge operation completed successfully rather than failing silently. The czseSessionTable exposes czseSessionOwnerType and czseSessionOwner, letting an operator detect a stuck or contested zoning session where one management application is blocking another's changes. An unexpected czseOperationModeResult value combined with a lingering session owner is a typical sign of a zoning conflict between two fabric management tools.

What Can Be Monitored

  • zoning capability support
  • zoning operation mode
  • operation result/success status
  • active zoning session owner
  • session owner type
