Category: Alarm and Event Management, Vendor: Cisco Devices, Wireless and WLAN

Description: Defines Cisco wireless SNMP notifications for access point events, client association, and RF anomalies.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-WIRELESS-NOTIFICATION-MIB?

CISCO-WIRELESS-NOTIFICATION-MIB defines a standardized notification/event history mechanism for Cisco wireless LAN controller-managed networks, intended to feed alerts up to a Network Management application or Northbound OSS. It exposes a history table of timestamped events, each tagged with a category, sub-category, managed-object address, and source display name, effectively acting as an event/fault log rather than a counter or configuration MIB. This makes it central to monitoring fault and status conditions across access points and wireless clients, surfacing things like device up/down events, association changes, and RF anomalies raised by the controller. It depends on the wireless controller's own event-generation logic (e.g. from other Cisco wireless MIBs) and on standard SNMP notification conventions (SNMPv2-TC) for its structure. It is typically deployed on Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers as the northbound event-reporting interface for enterprise NMS/OSS integration. Engineers can download the CISCO-WIRELESS-NOTIFICATION-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-WIRELESS-NOTIFICATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Wireless LAN Controller
  • Cisco access point-managed wireless network

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll cwNotificationHistoryTable (entries keyed by cWNotificationIndex) and inspect cWNotificationTimestamp, cWNotificationCategory, and cWNotificationSubCategory to see what kind of event fired and when, then use cWNotificationManagedObjectAddress and cWNotificationSourceDisplayName to identify which access point or client triggered it. A sudden burst of entries with the same category (e.g. RF or association-related) within a short window would indicate a widespread wireless outage or interference event. cwNotificationHistoryTableMaxLength governs how many historical events are retained before older ones roll off.

What Can Be Monitored

  • notification/event history
  • event category and sub-category
  • event timestamp
  • source device address of event
  • event history table size
