What Is CISCO-VSIMASTER-MIB?
CISCO-VSIMASTER-MIB is a Cisco-specific MIB covering the master side of the Virtual Switch Interface (VSI) protocol, part of Cisco's legacy ATM switching architecture (BPX/MGX platforms) that separates ATM switch control-plane software from switch-fabric hardware. It exposes configuration and status data about VSI master controllers, including controller identity, controller type, supported and in-use protocol version ranges, control-interface bindings, and the number of active cross-connects each controller manages. Administrators use it to monitor the operational health of the ATM control plane: verifying a VSI master controller is up and reachable, confirming version compatibility between master and slave sides via the version-support objects, and tracking cross-connect counts as an indicator of switch-fabric load or unexpected connection loss. It works in conjunction with the corresponding VSI controller (slave-side) MIB and Cisco's proprietary VSI protocol rather than any IETF standard. It is deployed on Cisco WAN switching platforms (e.g., BPX 8600 series, MGX 8xxx) where ATM switch fabrics are controlled by external routing/call-control processors, and network engineers can get the CISCO-VSIMASTER-MIB download to load into their MIB browser for control-plane monitoring.

Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll vsiMasterControllerTable/vsiMasterControllerEntry, keyed by vsiControllerIndex, to enumerate each VSI master controller's vsiControllerId, vsiControllerType, and vsiCrossConnects; a sudden drop in vsiCrossConnects for a controller that normally sustains a steady count could indicate an ATM switch-fabric or trunk failure. Comparing vsiVersionInUse against vsiBaseVersionSupported and vsiTopVersionSupported on both sides of a control interface helps diagnose failed or degraded VSI session negotiation. The vsiControlInterface and vsiLogicalControlInterface objects identify which physical/logical interface carries VSI control traffic for a given controller.
