Category: Cisco Devices, Network Interfaces

Description: Manages virtual interface creation, binding, and operational state for logical network interfaces on Cisco devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-VIRTUAL-INTERFACE-MIB?

This MIB manages Cisco Virtual Interfaces, logical interfaces that can be dynamically created and bound to a physical or another logical interface for services such as VPDN or tunneling. It exposes configuration objects for virtual interface groups, which group and bind sets of VIFs, plus operational status data including creation time, operational state, and failure cause for each VIF group. This makes it useful for monitoring software/logical-interface status, as administrators check virtual interface group operational state to see whether it is up, and failure cause to diagnose why a virtual interface failed to establish, alongside creation time to track session/interface age. It relates to and extends the standard Interfaces MIB (IF-MIB), since each virtual interface typically has a corresponding ifEntry. It is typically deployed on Cisco access/aggregation routers supporting dial, VPDN, or virtual-access interface features, where CISCO-VIRTUAL-INTERFACE-MIB SNMP monitoring tracks virtual interface group state and failure cause.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-VIRTUAL-INTERFACE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco access routers
  • Cisco aggregation routers with VPDN/dial support

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll cvifGroupTable / cvifGroupEntry, checking cvifGroupOperState and cvifGroupFailureCause for a given cvifGroupIndex to determine why a virtual interface group failed to bind (cvifGroupBindingIfIndex) to its underlying physical interface. The cvifGroupMemberList shows which member interfaces belong to the group, and cvifGroupCreationTime helps correlate a failure event with a specific provisioning attempt. cvifGroupsSupported would first be checked to confirm the platform supports virtual interface groups at all.

What Can Be Monitored

  • virtual interface group operational state
  • virtual interface failure cause
  • group creation time
  • member interface list
  • binding interface index
