Category: ATM, Cisco Devices

Description: Extends Multiprotocol Over ATM (MPOA) management with Cisco-specific client and server configuration objects.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-MPOA-EXT-MIB?

CISCO-MPOA-EXT-MIB is a Cisco extension to the ATM Forum's Multiprotocol Over ATM (MPOA) MIB, adding objects to retrieve information about MPOA shortcut virtual channel connections (VCCs) and to bind MPOA client (MPC) and server (MPS) entities to physical interfaces. It exposes configuration and state data for shortcut VCCs (VPI/VCI, destination ATM address) and interface-to-MPC/MPS mappings. Its monitoring focus is on the software/protocol state of ATM shortcut paths: verifying that shortcut VCCs are correctly established with the expected VPI/VCI and destination address, and that MPC/MPS bindings to interfaces are active (row status), which helps diagnose failed or missing ATM shortcuts. It explicitly builds on and depends on the ATM Forum's base MPOA MIB. It is deployed in legacy Cisco ATM-based campus/WAN networks using MPOA for efficient inter-subnet routing shortcuts over ATM. Engineers can download the CISCO-MPOA-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-MPOA-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco ATM switch/router (MPOA client/server platform)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll cMpcExtShortcutVCCTable (cmpcSCVpi, cmpcSCVci, cmpcDestAtmAddr) to confirm a shortcut VCC was established to the expected destination ATM address, revealing a misrouted or failed shortcut if the values don't match. cMpcInterfaceMappingTable and cMpsInterfaceMappingTable (indexed by cMpcInterfaceMappingIndex) show whether an interface is correctly bound to an MPC or MPS entity via cMpcInterfaceMappingRowStatus. A shortcut VCC entry that never populates or times out would indicate an MPOA cut-through failure between client and server.

What Can Be Monitored

  • shortcut VCC VPI/VCI values
  • shortcut VCC destination ATM address
  • MPC-to-interface binding status
  • MPS-to-interface binding status
  • row status of interface mappings
