Category: Cisco Devices, Fibre Channel and Storage

Description: Manages Cisco Storage Media Encryption (SME) key management and encryption policy for SAN data-at-rest protection on MDS.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-SME-MIB?

CISCO-SME-MIB manages Storage Media Encryption (SME) on Cisco MDS SAN switches, a Fibre Channel data-at-rest encryption feature within Cisco's storage-networking MIB family. It exposes configuration and state data for SME clusters, including cluster identity, operational state, the master node's network address, and cluster membership, since SME nodes are grouped into clusters for fault-tolerant encryption key management. Its monitoring value is centered on software/service health and high-availability status: an operator checks cSmeClusterState to confirm a cluster is healthy, verifies which node is currently acting as cSmeClusterMasterInetAddr, and reviews cluster membership to ensure enough nodes remain available to absorb a node failure without service disruption. It is a Cisco proprietary MIB layered on top of MDS Fibre Channel switching infrastructure with no strong external MIB dependency beyond standard row-status conventions. It is deployed in SAN environments requiring encryption of data at rest across MDS-based Fibre Channel fabrics, and storage administrators typically start with a CISCO-SME-MIB download to load the module into their SNMP management platform.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-SME-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MDS SAN switches (Storage Media Encryption)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll cSmeClusterTable/cSmeClusterEntry, checking cSmeClusterState and cSmeClusterMasterInetAddr to confirm the cluster is active and which node holds the master role, then examine cSmeClusterMembersTable/cSmeClusterMembersEntry (via cSmeMemberInetAddrType) to verify the expected number of member nodes are present. A cluster showing fewer members than configured, or a cSmeClusterRowStatus indicating an incomplete row, would signal a failed or disconnected SME encryption node putting fault tolerance at risk.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SME cluster operational state
  • master node address per cluster
  • cluster membership and node addresses
  • cluster storage type
  • cluster row/configuration status
