Description: Extends PoE management with Cisco-specific power budget, class, and per-port allocation statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-POWER-ETHERNET-EXT-MIB?

CISCO-POWER-ETHERNET-EXT-MIB is a Cisco-proprietary extension to the standard POWER-ETHERNET-MIB, adding vendor-specific detail for Power over Ethernet (PoE) on Cisco switch ports. Its data covers per-port Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) status: whether a port is enabled for power, its discovery mode, detected powered-device type (including Cisco pre-standard versus IEEE 802.3af/at classification), maximum/allocated/available/consumed power, and aggregate power-budget objects at the main-PSE-group level. As a hardware-status MIB it is central to PoE capacity planning and troubleshooting -- an operator can compare cpeExtPsePortPwrConsumption against cpeExtPsePortPwrMax to see how close a port is to its power ceiling, and check cpeExtMainPseTable to confirm the switch's overall PoE budget isn't exhausted. It extends the IETF POWER-ETHERNET-MIB directly (importing its port/group index conventions) rather than replacing it, so the two are typically browsed together. It is deployed on Cisco switches with PoE-capable ports -- IP phones, wireless access points, and PoE cameras being common powered devices -- and administrators auditing per-port power budgets can download the cisco-power-ethernet-ext-mib file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-POWER-ETHERNET-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Catalyst switches with PoE-capable Ethernet ports (powering IP phones, wireless access points, and PoE cameras)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator walks cpeExtPsePortTable/cpeExtPsePortEntry to compare cpeExtPsePortPwrConsumption against cpeExtPsePortPwrMax for each port, flagging any port running close to its ceiling before adding another PoE device to that switch. cpeExtPsePortDeviceDetected and cpeExtPsePortIeeePd confirm whether a newly connected device negotiated as an IEEE-standard or Cisco pre-standard powered device, which explains a lower-than-expected power allocation.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-port power consumption vs. maximum
  • PSE port enable/discovery state
  • powered-device detection and IEEE classification
  • chassis-wide PoE power budget
