Description: Manages Optical Transport Network (OTN/G.709) interface configuration and performance on Cisco optical platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-OTN-IF-MIB?
CISCO-OTN-IF-MIB is a Cisco proprietary MIB module for managing Optical Transport Network (OTN/ITU-T G.709) interfaces on Cisco DWDM optical transport platforms, covering both physical-layer configuration and performance monitoring of optical channel interfaces. It belongs to Cisco's optical networking MIB family and exposes controller-level configuration (loopback mode, wavelength, laser admin/operational status) alongside protocol-specific performance-monitoring (PM) counters such as pre-FEC bit error rate and dispersion-compensation status. This is a strong hardware/performance monitoring MIB: it lets operators check laser operational health, OTN framing status, forward error correction (FEC) mode, and pre-FEC BER trends to detect early signs of optical link degradation before it causes service-affecting errors. Consistent with typical PM MIBs, it supports threshold-based alerting during accumulation cycles when a parameter crosses a configured error level, and it builds on general ITU-T G.709 OTN and DWDM optical-transport concepts. It is deployed on Cisco DWDM/optical transport platforms used by service providers for long-haul and metro optical networks. Engineers can download the CISCO-OTN-IF-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-OTN-IF-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco DWDM/OTN optical transport platforms
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll coiIfControllerTable/coiIfControllerEntry to check coiIfControllerLaserAdminStatus versus coiIfControllerLaserOperStatus to confirm a DWDM channel's laser is administratively enabled and actually up, and check coiIfControllerOtnStatus and coiIfControllerFECMode to verify OTN framing and forward error correction are functioning as configured. coiIfControllerPreFECBERMantissa would be tracked over time as an early-warning performance indicator -- a rising pre-FEC BER signals fiber or optics degradation before hard errors occur. coiIfControllerTDCOperStatus and coiIfControllerTDCOperSetting would additionally be checked to confirm chromatic dispersion compensation is correctly tuned for the wavelength in use (coiIfControllerWavelength).
What Can Be Monitored
- laser admin/operational status
- wavelength assignment
- OTN framing status
- FEC mode
- pre-FEC bit error rate
- chromatic dispersion compensation status

| ciscoOtnIfMIB | 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.639 | This MIB module defines the managed objects for physical layer characteristics of DWDM optical channel interfaces and performance statistics objects for protocol specific error counters in DWDM optical devices. Performance monitoring (PM) parameters are used by service providers to gather, store, set thresholds for and report performance data for early detection of problems. Thresholds are used to set error levels for each PM parameter. During the accumulation cycle, if the current value of a performance monitoring parameter reaches or exceeds its corresponding threshold value, a threshold crossing alarm (TCA) is generated. The TCAs provide early detection of performance degradation. The definitions contained herein are based on the OTN specifications in ITU-T G.872[ITU-T G.872], G.709 [ITU-T G.709], G.798[ITU-T G.798], G.874[ITU-T G.874], and G.874.1[ITU-T G.874.1].
