Category: Alarm and Event Management, Cisco Devices

Description: Provides generic alarm management including alarm table and notification control on Cisco devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-ALARM-MIB?

CISCO-ALARM-MIB defines a generic, cross-platform alarm-management framework for Cisco devices, providing a common active-alarm table and notification mechanism usable by many different hardware and software subsystems. It exposes fault/alarm data — a list of currently active alarms, each tied to a specific interface (via ifIndex) or physical entity (via entPhysicalIndex), with an alarm type, timestamp, severity, current status, and whether the alarm is service-affecting. This is fundamentally a faults/status MIB used to monitor overall device health: by walking the active-alarm table an operator gets a consolidated view of every current hardware or software fault, its severity, and whether it is impacting service, rather than polling many separate subsystem-specific MIBs individually. It explicitly ties alarm entries back to the standard IF-MIB (ifIndex) and ENTITY-MIB (entPhysicalIndex) for locating the affected interface or physical component. It is deployed broadly across Cisco platforms as a common alarm-surfacing layer, useful in NOC/EMS environments that need a single alarm feed per device. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CISCO-ALARM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-ALARM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers and switches (cross-platform Cisco alarm framework, not a single product)

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls coiAlarmActiveTable/coiAlarmActiveEntry indexed by coiAlarmIndex and filters on coiAlarmSeverity and coiAlarmServiceAffecting to prioritize which active faults need immediate attention. coiAlarmObjectEntPhyIndex or coiAlarmObjectIfIndex identifies exactly which physical component or interface raised the alarm, coiAlarmType and coiAlarmObjectName describe what kind of fault occurred, and coiAlarmTimeStamp shows when it started — for example, spotting a service-affecting alarm on a specific power-supply entity that has been active for an extended period.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active alarm list
  • alarm severity
  • alarm type
  • service-affecting flag
  • alarm timestamp
  • affected interface/physical entity
