Category: Cisco Devices, IP and Core Protocols, Routing Protocols

Description: Defines Cisco OSPF-specific SNMP trap notifications for link state and neighbor adjacency change events.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-OSPF-TRAP-MIB?

CISCO-OSPF-TRAP-MIB is a Cisco Systems proprietary MIB defining OSPF notification objects aligned with a later IETF OSPF MIB update draft, including support for OSPF sham-link notifications. Its objects cover a global trap-enable control, configuration-error type/packet type/source classification for a misconfigured interface or virtual interface, and notification triggers for LSA retransmission, origination, and max-age events. As a protocol-status/notification MIB it lets an administrator get alerted to OSPF interface misconfigurations and abnormal LSA churn (retransmits, max-age expirations) that often precede routing instability. It is deployed on Cisco routers running OSPF. Engineers can download the CISCO-OSPF-TRAP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-OSPF-TRAP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers running OSPF

Monitoring Examples

An administrator investigates a cospfTxRetransmit notification alongside cospfIfConfigError for the same interface to determine whether a misconfiguration is causing repeated LSA retransmissions on an OSPF adjacency.

What Can Be Monitored

  • OSPF configuration-error and LSA retransmission/origination/max-age notifications
