Description: Monitors results of hardware diagnostics executed at boot time on Cisco platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-BOOT-HWDIAGS-MIB?

CISCO-BOOT-HWDIAGS-MIB is a Cisco vendor-specific MIB that exposes the configuration and results of hardware diagnostic tests executed during IOS boot-up, before any IOS subsystem has started. It models per-bank test categories (EDAC, EEPROM, FPGA, etc.) in ciscoBootHwDiagsMIBTestTable, indexed by ciscoBootHwDiagsMIBTestIndex, and tracks per-bank/per-test outcomes in ciscoBootHwDiagsMIBTable via ciscoBootHwDiagsMIBLastBootExecuted, ciscoBootHwDiagsMIBLastBootPassed, ciscoBootHwDiagsMIBNextBootConfigured and ciscoBootHwDiagsMIBNextBootArmed, plus platform-specific ciscoBootHwDiagsMIBConfigCode/ResultCode bitmasks. ciscoBootHwDiagsMIBCurrentBank identifies which hardware bank the device actually booted from and ran its diagnostics against. A failed boot-time diagnostic (LastBootPassed=false) on a fielded device is a strong early indicator of a failing EEPROM, FPGA, or memory component before it causes an operational outage; it depends on the device supporting dual/multiple diagnostic banks and the underlying ROMMON/IOS boot diagnostic framework, and administrators can download the CISCO-BOOT-HWDIAGS-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-BOOT-HWDIAGS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers/switches supporting IOS boot-time hardware diagnostics (dual-bank diagnostic hardware)

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls ciscoBootHwDiagsMIBTable for the current bank (from ciscoBootHwDiagsMIBCurrentBank) and checks ciscoBootHwDiagsMIBLastBootPassed for each test category named in ciscoBootHwDiagsMIBTestName; a value of false alongside a nonzero ciscoBootHwDiagsMIBResultCode for the FPGA test category would indicate a hardware fault detected at the last boot.

What Can Be Monitored

  • boot bank selection (ciscoBootHwDiagsMIBCurrentBank)
  • per-test pass/fail status (LastBootExecuted/LastBootPassed)
  • next-boot test configuration and arming
  • platform-specific diagnostic config/result codes
  • EDAC/EEPROM/FPGA test categories
