Category: Alarm and Event Management, Cisco Devices, Device Management, Network Monitoring (RMON)

Description: Manages SNMP notification rate limiting and filtering to control trap generation on Cisco network devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-NOTIFICATION-CONTROL-MIB?

CISCO-NOTIFICATION-CONTROL-MIB is a Cisco module that lets an administrator regulate the rate and volume of SNMP notifications (traps) a device generates, to prevent an event storm from flooding the network and the management station. It exposes configuration data (per-notification-type mode, threshold, and sampling interval) and status data (current suppression state) in a control table keyed by the notification's OID. This is used to monitor the software/event health of a device indirectly: seeing that a particular notification type has crossed its threshold and is currently being suppressed is itself a signal that an underlying condition, such as link flapping or repeated faults, is firing rapidly and needs investigation. It complements the standard SNMP notification/trap delivery mechanisms defined in the SNMPv2-MIB and SNMP-NOTIFICATION-MIB (RFC 3413). It is deployed on Cisco routers and switches in large networks where uncontrolled trap volume needs to be managed to protect the NMS, using the CISCO-NOTIFICATION-CONTROL-MIB MIB to configure per-notification thresholds.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-NOTIFICATION-CONTROL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers and switches

Monitoring Examples

The cNotifCtrlTable/Entry, indexed by cNotifCtrlIndex, holds cNotifCtrlOID (the notification type being controlled), cNotifCtrlMode, cNotifCtrlThreshold, and cNotifCtrlSamplingInterval. An administrator polls cNotifCtrlCurrentState to detect that a particular trap type, for example one tied to interface link-state changes, has crossed its threshold and is currently being suppressed, indicating the underlying event is firing rapidly.

What Can Be Monitored

  • notification control mode per OID
  • current notification suppression state
  • notification threshold
  • notification sampling interval
  • notification control table size
