Category: Cisco Devices, Fibre Channel and Storage

Description: Manages iSNS (Internet Storage Name Service) client registration and server discovery for IP SANs.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-ISNS-CLIENT-MIB?

CISCO-ISNS-CLIENT-MIB manages and monitors Internet Storage Name Service (iSNS) client functionality on Cisco storage-networking devices, part of Cisco's SAN/storage-networking technology area supporting IP-based storage (iSCSI) discovery. It exposes configuration data about iSNS server profiles used by the client, including server address, port, and profile status. It is used to monitor the software status of the iSNS client's connectivity to its configured discovery servers, verifying that cIsnsClntServerProfileStatus shows an active, correctly bound registration rather than a failed or pending connection to the iSNS server. It is closely tied to the broader iSNS/iSCSI storage-network standards and is often deployed alongside other Cisco storage MIBs covering Fibre Channel or FCIP functionality. It is typically deployed on Cisco MDS-series storage/SAN switches participating in IP-based storage networks, and administrators can download the CISCO-ISNS-CLIENT-MIB file to load it into a MIB browser for these switches.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-ISNS-CLIENT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MDS-series SAN/storage switches

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll cIsnsClntServerProfileTable/cIsnsClntServerProfileEntry, keyed by cIsnsClntServerProfileName and cIsnsClntServerIndex, checking cIsnsClntServerProfileAddr, cIsnsClntServerProfileAddrType, and cIsnsClntServerProfilePort to confirm the client is pointed at the correct iSNS server. cIsnsClntServerProfileStatus reveals whether that server profile's row is active, notInService, or otherwise not fully operational. A profile stuck in a non-active status would indicate the switch cannot register with or discover targets from its iSNS server.

What Can Be Monitored

  • iSNS server profile address/port
  • iSNS server profile status
  • client registration state
