What Is CISCO-GSLB-HEALTH-MON-MIB?

CISCO-GSLB-HEALTH-MON-MIB is a Cisco-specific SNMP module for Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) devices, defining objects for configuring and monitoring keepalive health probes that periodically check whether a backend server resource associated with a DNS answer is still active. It exposes objects for probe configuration (query domain names, HTTP/TCP probe methods and termination behavior, decay parameters) as well as statistics such as the total number of configured probes and dropped keepalive notifications, plus related trap-rate-limiting controls. Its monitoring focus is squarely on the health/availability status of backend application servers behind a GSLB deployment: administrators use it to confirm keepalive probes are actively reaching servers, to see how many probes are configured versus expected, and to catch dropped notifications that could mean the GSLB device's monitoring subsystem is overloaded or misbehaving. Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll cghMonKalParameterTable to review cghMonKalParameterMethod for each keepalive, confirming whether a given probe uses cghMonHttpHeadPath (an HTTP HEAD-based check) or a TCP connection check, and check cghMonHttpHeadConnTermMethod/cghMonTcpConnTermMethod to see how the probe closes its connection after checking. Monitoring cghMonTotalConfiguredProbes against an expected baseline would reveal if probes were accidentally removed, while a rising cghMonDroppedKalNotifs count would indicate the GSLB device is dropping keepalive result notifications, possibly due to cghMonKalTrapRateLimit being hit under high probe volume. The cghMonNsQueryDomainName object ties a given probe back to the DNS domain name being load-balanced, useful when diagnosing why a specific hostname is returning an unhealthy server.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cghMonKalSentProbes OID:

Select a Cisco Global Site Selector (GSS) / GSLB device as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cghMonKalSentProbes into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object specifies the total number of keepalive probes sent to the remote device, identified by cgdAnswerAddress. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in probes), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
