What Is CISCO-GSLB-DNS-MIB?

CISCO-GSLB-DNS-MIB provides management objects for the DNS-based Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) feature on Cisco's Global Site Selector (GSS) platform, which directs client DNS queries to the optimal data center based on configured rules and proximity. It exposes counts of configured domains, domain lists, source-address lists, answers, answer groups, and rules, plus global DNS traffic statistics such as queries received, host-address queries, and unmatched queries, along with rate-limiting settings for traps. Its monitoring focus is on software/service-level performance rather than physical hardware: administrators track query volumes and unmatched-query counts to detect misconfigured DNS rules or an overloaded GSS, and monitor configuration object counts to audit GSLB scale and catch unexpected configuration growth or drift. It is a self-contained application-layer MIB built around DNS (RFC 1035) concepts and Cisco's proprietary GSLB terminology, rather than depending on other hardware MIBs. It is deployed on Cisco GSS appliances at data-center edges, used by enterprises for disaster-recovery failover and geographic load distribution of DNS-resolved services, and engineers configuring GSS appliances typically start with a CISCO-GSLB-DNS-MIB download to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An operations team would poll cgdDnsRcvdQueries and cgdDnsRcvdHostAddrQueries to baseline normal DNS query load on the GSS, then watch cgdDnsUnmatchedQueries for a spike indicating client queries not matching any configured GSLB rule, often caused by a stale domain-list entry. Tracking cgdTotalDomains, cgdTotalAnswers, and cgdTotalRules over time would reveal unexpected configuration growth suggesting drift from the intended GSLB design. cgdAnsTrapRateLimit and cgdDnsClauseTrapRateLimit would be checked to ensure trap flooding is controlled during an answer-availability event affecting many domains simultaneously.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cgdDnsRcvdQueries OID:

Select a Cisco DNS/GSLB appliance as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cgdDnsRcvdQueries into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. This object specifies the number of DNS queries received. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in queries), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
