Description: Extends the CISCO-GGSN-MIB with additional objects for monitoring enhanced GPRS gateway functionality on Cisco GGSN platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-GGSN-EXT-MIB?
CISCO-GGSN-EXT-MIB is a Cisco private enterprise MIB that extends CISCO-GGSN-MIB, adding objects for monitoring enhanced functionality of the Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN), a core mobile-network element that provides IP routing and GPRS-specific interworking for mobile subscribers' PDP context sessions. It exposes performance and event counters around PDP context lifecycle management, including SGSN-initiated local deletions, PDP update request/response activity, Change of Authorization (CoA) message handling, and Direct Tunnel (DT) related PDP failures. Its monitoring role is centered on the software/session-processing health of the GGSN: rising counts of failed PDP updates, discarded CoA messages, or Direct-Tunnel update failures signal problems in mobile session continuity or signaling between the GGSN and SGSN, functioning as a service-status indicator for mobile data sessions rather than physical hardware health. It explicitly depends on and extends CISCO-GGSN-MIB, and implicitly on 3GPP GPRS/GTP protocol concepts. It is deployed in mobile carrier core networks on Cisco GGSN platforms handling GPRS/UMTS data sessions. Engineers can download the CISCO-GGSN-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-GGSN-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node) mobile core platforms
Monitoring Examples
An operator would track cGgsnExtSentPdpUpdateReqs against cGgsnExtRcvdSuccPdpUpdateResponses to compute the success rate of PDP context updates, with a widening gap indicating SGSN-side signaling problems. cGgsnExtRcvdCoaMsgs versus cGgsnExtDiscardedCoaMsgs reveals whether Change-of-Authorization messages (used for dynamic policy changes) are being processed or dropped by the GGSN. cGgsnExtNoWaitSgsnLocalDelPDPs and cGgsnExtNoReqSgsnLocalDelPDPs indicate how many PDP contexts were locally deleted by the SGSN without or without a delete request, which can reveal abnormal session teardown patterns, while cGgsnExtTotalDtUpdFailDeletedPDPs highlights Direct Tunnel update failures leading to session deletion.
What Can Be Monitored
- PDP update requests sent vs. successful responses received
- CoA messages received vs. discarded
- SGSN-initiated local PDP deletions
- Direct Tunnel update failures/error indications
- error indication messages sent/received

| ciscoGgsnExtMIB | 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.647 | This MIB module extends the CISCO-GGSN-MIB. This MIB module manages the Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) devices. A GGSN device provides interworking with external packet-data network of a particular GPRS service provider. It provides a combination of IP routing and GPRS specific functionality to support mobile users. A PDP context on the GGSN device contains the mobile users session information, during an active session. This information is used by the device to control the session. An active PDP context is created when a mobile station's service request is authenticated and served by the GGSN device. RFC description
Extends CISCO-GGSN-MIB to manage Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) devices for mobile network interworking and PDP context sessions.
Start monitoring Cisco GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
