Category: Cisco Devices, Device Management, Hardware and Environment

Description: Monitors sensor values and thresholds for physical entities (temperature, voltage, current, power sensors) listed in the ENTITY-MIB entPhysicalTable.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB?

This MIB monitors physical sensor readings, temperature, voltage, current, and power, for physical entities listed in the standard ENTITY-MIB's entPhysicalTable, and is one of the most directly hardware-health-focused MIBs in the Cisco portfolio. It exposes a sensor value table (entSensorValueTable) with sensor type, measurement scale/precision, current value, operational status, last-update timestamp, and update rate, plus a threshold table for defining warning/critical limits per sensor. This MIB is explicitly designed for monitoring hardware status, temperature sensors, power supply voltage/current sensors, and fan-related sensors, making it a core building block for environmental and power health monitoring on Cisco devices. It explicitly depends on and extends ENTITY-MIB (RFC 2037) for identifying which physical entity each sensor measures. It is deployed across virtually all modern Cisco routers, switches, and chassis platforms equipped with onboard environmental sensors, making the Cisco Entity Sensor MIB a near-universal building block for hardware health monitoring on Cisco gear.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers, switches, and chassis platforms with onboard environmental sensors

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll entSensorValueTable entries, using entSensorType and entSensorMeasuredEntity to identify a temperature or voltage sensor tied to a specific line card or power supply, and check entSensorValue against entSensorThresholdTable limits to detect an overheating or under-voltage condition. entSensorStatus reveals whether a sensor reading is currently valid, unavailable, or non-operational, while entSensorValueTimeStamp and entSensorValueUpdateRate confirm how fresh the polled reading is, important for catching a sensor that has stopped updating.

What Can Be Monitored

  • temperature readings
  • voltage/current readings
  • sensor operational status
  • threshold breach (warning/critical)
  • sensor reading freshness/update rate
