What Is CISCO-ENERGYWISE-MIB?

This MIB implements Cisco EnergyWise, a Cisco specification and protocol for discovering, managing, and optimizing power usage across compatible network devices and endpoints. It exposes device/domain identity, an entity table (cewEntTable) of power-manageable components linked to ENTITY-MIB physical entities, neighbor relationships, importance-based power policy attributes, and role/keyword metadata for power management grouping. It is used for monitoring and controlling the power state and consumption of network devices and endpoints, directly supporting hardware power management, identifying power-manageable entities, their neighbors, and their configured power importance levels for budget enforcement, making it a hardware power-status and control MIB rather than a general performance-counter MIB. It explicitly builds on ENTITY-MIB (RFC 2037), characterizing EnergyWise entities via the physical-entity attributes defined there. It is deployed across Cisco-powered networks, switches, IP phones, and PoE endpoints implementing Cisco EnergyWise power management.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-ENERGYWISE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll cewEntTable entries, examining cewEntName, cewEntRoleDescription, and cewEntKeyword to identify which physical entities are EnergyWise-manageable and their power role. cewDeviceNeighborCount and cewEntNeighborIndex reveal EnergyWise topology relationships between devices, while cewMaxImportance/cewMaxImportanceId show the highest-priority power policy applied within a domain, useful for confirming power budget enforcement is behaving as expected during a power-saving event. cewDomainName scopes monitoring to a specific EnergyWise management domain.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cewDeviceNeighborCount OID:

Select a Cisco switch, IP phone, or PoE endpoint (EnergyWise) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cewDeviceNeighborCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. This object indicates the current number of neighbors. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in neighbors), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
