What Is CISCO-IETF-DHCP-SERVER-EXT-MIB?

CISCO-IETF-DHCP-SERVER-EXT-MIB extends the Cisco IETF DHCP Server MIB with additional objects for managing DHCP server operation on Cisco IOS platforms, including server start/reset timekeeping, lease-query statistics, and DHCP failover protocol (FO) message counters. It belongs to Cisco's IP address-management MIB family and exposes operational data covering server uptime-style timers, statistics reset tracking, and detailed failover peer communication counts (binding updates, acks, naks, pool requests, polls). This is a software service-status MIB: it lets administrators confirm the DHCP server process is running normally and that its failover partner relationship is healthy, since stalled cDhcpv4FOBindingUpdsRcvd or cDhcpv4FOPollsRcvd counts would indicate a failover peer communication problem. It explicitly extends the IETF-oriented Cisco DHCP Server MIB and, by association, concepts from RFC-based DHCP MIB work. It is deployed on Cisco IOS routers/switches configured as DHCP servers, particularly in failover pair configurations, as defined in the CISCO-IETF-DHCP-SERVER-EXT-MIB MIB.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would check cDhcpv4SrvStartTime and cDhcpv4SrvResetTime to confirm the DHCP server process hasn't unexpectedly restarted, and cDhcpv4StatisticsResetTime to know the baseline for other counters. Polling cDhcpv4LeaseQueries alongside cDhcpv4FOBindingUpdsRcvd and cDhcpv4FOBindingAcksRcvd reveals whether lease information is being synchronized correctly with a failover peer. A flat cDhcpv4FOPacketsRcvd count while the DHCP service is otherwise active would suggest the failover link to the partner server has gone down.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cDhcpv4LeaseQueries OID:

Select a Cisco IOS router/switch configured as a DHCP server as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cDhcpv4LeaseQueries into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The total number of DHCPLEASEQUERY packets received. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in packets), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
