Description: Manages client and line port configuration and status on Ciena WaveServer optical platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CIENA-WS-PORT-MIB?
CIENA-WS-PORT-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB for Ciena's WaveServer optical transport platform, modeling the physical and logical ports through which client (customer-facing) and line (DWDM network-facing) optical signals pass. It exposes inventory and identity data (port name, description, type, interface type, MAC address) as well as port state information for both client and line ports, which the system auto-creates and maps together via services and service-domains. Its primary monitoring value is hardware/software status tracking of optical port health: administrators use it to confirm port operational/administrative state, verify correct port-to-service mapping, and detect ports that have gone down or been misconfigured. It complements Ciena's broader WaveServer MIB family and likely aligns its interface typing with standard IANAifType conventions. Typical deployment is in metro or long-haul DWDM transport networks where WaveServer boxes provide coherent optical transponder/muxponder functionality and NMS systems poll port state to ensure client services remain mapped to healthy line-side wavelengths. Engineers can download the CIENA-WS-PORT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CIENA-WS-PORT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Ciena WaveServer optical transport platform
Monitoring Examples
An operator would query cwsPortPortsTable (cwsPortPortsEntry, keyed by cwsPortPortsPortId) together with cwsPortIdTable (cwsPortIdName, cwsPortIdDescription, cwsPortIdPortType, cwsPortIdMacAddress, cwsPortIdInterfaceType) to inventory every client and line port and confirm its type and identity. Polling cwsPortStateTable reveals whether a given port is up, down, or in an abnormal state, which would surface a line-side optical fault or a client port that lost its automatic service mapping. This is a data-bearing configuration/status MIB rather than a pure conformance module, so real-time polling of port state is a normal monitoring activity.
What Can Be Monitored
- client port status
- line port status
- port type and interface type
- port MAC address
- port-to-service mapping state
- port administrative/operational state
