Description: Appian Communications network timing stratum level and clock synchronization management.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is APPIAN-STRATUM-MIB?
APPIAN-STRATUM-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Appian Communications for managing Stratum clock timing modules -- hardware used to synchronize network equipment to a reference clock source (e.g. GPS, BITS, or a network timing signal). It exposes per-node clock configuration and status data including the currently selected clock source, redundant module (A/B) operational status, and alarm status. This MIB is explicitly for monitoring hardware status: it tracks operational health (acStratumOpStatusModuleA/B) and alarm conditions (acStratumAlarmStatusModuleA/B) of redundant timing modules, plus which clock source each module is currently locked to, and can raise traps (acStratumTraps) on state changes such as loss of clock lock or module failure. It likely depends on standard SNMP notification conventions (SNMPv2-MIB/SNMPv2-TRAP) for its trap definitions. Typical deployment is in telecom transport/access equipment (e.g. SONET/synchronization shelves) from Appian Communications where accurate network timing distribution is critical. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the APPIAN-STRATUM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in APPIAN-STRATUM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Appian Communications telecom transport/timing shelves (SONET/access equipment)
Monitoring Examples
An operator polling acStratumTable would check acStratumOpStatusModuleA and acStratumOpStatusModuleB to confirm both redundant clock modules are operational, and acStratumCurrentClockSourceModuleA/B to see which reference source (e.g. line, external, internal) each is locked to. A change in acStratumAlarmStatusModuleA to an alarm state, especially alongside a value change in acStratumClockSource, would indicate the node has lost its primary timing reference and possibly failed over via acStratumManualSwitch. The acStratumTraps notification group means such alarm transitions can also be pushed proactively rather than only discovered by polling.
What Can Be Monitored
- clock module operational status
- clock module alarm status
- current clock source per module
- lockout reference setting
- manual clock switch state
