What Is CIENA-WS-PM-MIB?

CIENA-WS-PM-MIB is a Ciena-specific performance-monitoring MIB for the WaveServer optical transport platform, part of Ciena's packet-optical product line. It exposes performance-monitoring configuration and history-persistence state, including admin state of PM collection, the persistence interval, storage location, and current bin-save/file-size state. Its purpose is monitoring: it lets an operator confirm whether PM collection is administratively enabled, how often data is persisted, and how full or current the stored PM history file is -- effectively health-of-monitoring status for the optical/Ethernet performance subsystem. Ciena's PM model follows general ITU-T/telecom PM bin conventions common across optical transport MIBs, though no explicit external MIB import is indicated here. It is deployed on Ciena WaveServer platforms in DWDM/optical transport networks where continuous, persisted performance history is required for optical and Ethernet interfaces. Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll cwsPmGlobalConfigAdminState in cwsPmGlobalConfigTable/cwsPmGlobalConfigEntry to confirm PM collection is enabled, and check cwsPmGlobalConfigPersistenceInterval and cwsPmGlobalConfigPersistenceStorageLocation to see how often and where bins are saved. Monitoring cwsPmPersistenceStateTable's cwsPmPersistenceStateCurrentFileSize and cwsPmPersistenceStateNextHistoryBinSave would reveal whether the persistence file is approaching capacity or the next scheduled bin save is overdue, indicating a stalled PM subsystem.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cwsPmExtendedCurrentStatisticsFrameErrorRatio OID:

Select a Ciena Waveserver optical transport platform as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cwsPmExtendedCurrentStatisticsFrameErrorRatio into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports rMON frame error ratio. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
