What Is CIENA-WS-XCVR-MIB?

CIENA-WS-XCVR-MIB is a Ciena enterprise MIB modeling pluggable transceiver (XCVR) modules on the Ciena Waveserver optical transport platform, providing a common data model augmented by type-specific transceiver attributes. It exposes per-port transceiver identity, presence, and administrative/operational state, with attributes populated only when a transceiver module is physically installed. This is a hardware-monitoring MIB in the classic sense: it lets operators detect whether a transceiver is present, identify its type/name, and check its administrative state, which is essential for spotting missing, mismatched, or administratively disabled optical modules before they cause a service outage. It is a Ciena-proprietary MIB specific to the Waveserver's XCVR object model. It is deployed on Waveserver line and client ports wherever pluggable optical transceivers (e.g., QSFP, CFP2) are used for DWDM or client-side optical connections. Engineers can download the CIENA-WS-XCVR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

An operator would iterate cwsXcvrXcvrsTable by cwsXcvrXcvrIndex to enumerate all transceiver slots, check cwsXcvrXcvrIdName/cwsXcvrXcvrIdDescription to confirm the correct module type is installed, and poll cwsXcvrXcvrStateAdminState to verify the port is administratively enabled; an entry reporting empty identity fields with the port expected to be populated would indicate a missing or failed transceiver.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cwsXcvrXcvrStatePowerState OID:

Select a Ciena WaveServer optical transport platform as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cwsXcvrXcvrStatePowerState into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the power State of the XCVR. If it is in low power mode or normal power mode. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is anything other than 'normal', since that indicates the condition this object reports has changed to one worth investigating. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
