Description: Tracks software feature license installation and status on Ciena WaveServer optical platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CIENA-WS-LICENSE-MIB?
This is a vendor-specific MIB from Ciena for tracking software feature license installation and compliance on its WaveServer optical transport platforms. It exposes tables of registered license clients, their compliance state, and the list of installed licenses with names and indices, representing the software entitlement layer of the device rather than physical hardware. Its monitoring purpose is software status: administrators check cwsLicenseClientStateComplianceState to confirm a WaveServer node remains in license compliance, and enumerate cwsLicenseLicenseslistTable to verify which optional features (e.g., specific line-rate or encryption licenses) are installed and active, catching a license that has expired or failed to register before a feature silently stops working. It is a self-contained proprietary MIB specific to Ciena's licensing framework, with no strong dependency on external standard MIBs apparent from its objects. It is deployed on Ciena WaveServer optical platforms in service-provider and enterprise optical transport networks where feature licensing gates capacity or functionality. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CIENA-WS-LICENSE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CIENA-WS-LICENSE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Ciena WaveServer optical transport platform
Monitoring Examples
An operator checks cwsLicenseClientStateTable/cwsLicenseClientStateEntry, keyed by cwsLicenseClientStateTableSnmpKey, to read cwsLicenseClientStateComplianceState and confirm a WaveServer chassis is in compliance rather than in a grace-period or violation state. The cwsLicenseLicenseslistTable (cwsLicenseLicenseslistEntry, indexed by cwsLicenseLicenseslistLicenseIndex) is polled for cwsLicenseLicenseslistName to enumerate which licensed features are installed, letting an admin detect a missing license after a card swap. cwsLicenseClientIdTable tracks the registration ID used to validate each licensed client against Ciena's licensing system.
What Can Be Monitored
- license compliance state
- installed license list/names
- license client registration ID
