Description: Manages software image versions, upgrade operations, and firmware management for network devices.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is DEVSW-MIB?
DEVSW-MIB is a vendor device-management MIB (ANI-prefixed) that reports on the software image and configuration file loaded onto a network device, applicable to both base station units (BSU) and subscriber units (SU) in a wireless access system, with some objects device-specific to one or the other. It exposes software/firmware inventory data, including configuration file name, system software file, WSS software file, and version/build identifiers, rather than traffic or interface statistics. Its primary monitoring role is software status verification: an operator can confirm exactly which firmware version and build is running on a device, and which configuration file it last loaded, which is essential for tracking firmware compliance, diagnosing feature or bug regressions tied to specific builds, and verifying upgrade operations completed as expected. It is a companion module within the same vendor's device MIB suite (alongside DEVEVENT-MIB and the device-server MIB) rather than tied to an IETF standard. It is typically deployed on wireless base station and subscriber units where operators need to audit and manage firmware/software versions across a fleet of field devices. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the DEVSW-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DEVSW-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- wireless base station unit (BSU)
- wireless subscriber unit (SU)
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll aniDevSwVersion, aniDevSwBuild, and aniDevSwBuildDate to confirm which firmware release is active on a given BSU or SU, and check aniDevSwConfigFile and aniDevSwSystemSoftwareFile to verify the correct configuration and system image files are loaded. A mismatch between the expected and reported aniDevSwVersion across a set of devices would flag units that failed to complete a scheduled firmware upgrade; aniDevSwWssSoftwareFile is specifically relevant only to BSU devices per the module description.
What Can Be Monitored
- running software version
- software build number and date
- loaded configuration file
- system software file name
