Category: Network Monitoring (RMON), Vendor: Ciena

Description: Provides RMON-style remote monitoring statistics on Ciena CES Carrier Ethernet switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CIENA-CES-RMON-MIB?

CIENA-CES-RMON-MIB is a Ciena proprietary MIB providing RMON-style (Remote Network Monitoring) traffic statistics configuration on Ciena CES Carrier Ethernet switches, modeled after the standard RMON framework but with Ciena-specific extensions. It exposes objects for configuring traffic statistics collection, history sampling, and alarm/event thresholds on switch interfaces. Its monitoring value is centered on interface-level performance data such as packet, byte, error, and utilization counters gathered over time, enabling detection of traffic anomalies, congestion, or error-rate spikes on a per-port basis. It is modeled on and interoperates conceptually with the standard IETF RMON MIB. It is deployed on CES switches where operators need granular, historical traffic statistics for capacity planning and fault detection beyond basic interface counters. Engineers can download the CIENA-CES-RMON-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CIENA-CES-RMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ciena Carrier Ethernet Switch (CES)

Monitoring Examples

No specific object names were provided for this module, but consistent with RMON conventions an admin would typically configure statistics/history control entries per interface and poll resulting counter tables for packet/error rates, using threshold-crossing alarms to detect a sudden spike in CRC errors or a drop in throughput on a monitored port.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-interface packet/byte counters
  • error rate statistics
  • traffic history samples
  • threshold alarm events
