What Is CIE1000-PORT-MIB?

CIE1000-PORT-MIB is a Cisco-private port-management MIB for the Cisco IE1000 series industrial Ethernet switches, modeled on the standard PORT-MIB. It exposes a per-interface configuration table covering administrative shutdown state, speed, duplex/advertise settings, media type, flow control (FC/PFC), MTU, and frame-length checking. In monitoring terms it is primarily used to track port-level operational and administrative status and configuration health—an admin can detect a port that has been shut down, is misconfigured for speed/duplex, or is showing excessive link restarts, a strong indicator of a flapping or failing physical connection. It is a Cisco private extension layered on ifIndex from the standard IF-MIB, tying each entry back to the interface table. It is deployed in industrial/ruggedized Ethernet environments (factory floor, process control networks) where IE1000 switches provide hardened Ethernet connectivity. Engineers can download the CIE1000-PORT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll cie1000PortConfigTable/cie1000PortConfigEntry, indexed by cie1000PortConfigIfIndex, checking cie1000PortConfigShutdown, cie1000PortConfigSpeed, and cie1000PortConfigExcessiveRestart for each port. A rising cie1000PortConfigExcessiveRestart counter combined with the cie1000PortConfigMediaType and cie1000PortConfigFC settings would reveal a port repeatedly restarting, pointing to a bad cable, SFP, or a duplex/speed mismatch with the connected industrial device.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cie1000PortStatisticsRmonStatisticsRxDropEvents OID:

Select a Cisco IE1000 industrial Ethernet switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cie1000PortStatisticsRmonStatisticsRxDropEvents into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. Shows the number of frames discarded due to ingress congestion. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
