Description: The type of mapping.
Setting this object to the value invalid(2) has the effect of invalidating the corresponding entry in the ipNetToMediaTable. That is, it effectively dissasociates the interface identified with said entry from the mapping identified with said entry. It is an implementation-specific matter as to whether the agent removes an invalidated entry from the table. Accordingly, management stations must be prepared to receive tabular information from agents that corresponds to entries not currently in use. Proper interpretation of such entries requires examination of the relevant ipNetToMediaType object.
What is ipNetToMediaType?
Classifies how this net-to-media mapping was learned: other, invalid, dynamic (learned via ARP), or static (manually configured), and notes that setting it to invalid effectively removes the entry. Distinguishing dynamic from static mappings matters because a static entry an admin didn't create is a red flag, while an admin can also use the invalid(2) setting as a remote way to flush a bad dynamic entry without waiting for the ARP cache timeout. Example: finding an entry marked static(4) for an IP nobody remembers hard-coding is exactly the kind of anomaly worth investigating as a potential persistence mechanism.
