Category: Optical and WDM, Vendor: Cisco ONS/Cerent

Description: Provides generic performance monitoring data collection objects for Cisco/Cerent ONS optical transport platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CERENT-GENERIC-PM-MIB?

CERENT-GENERIC-PM-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Cisco (originally Cerent) for ONS optical transport platforms, providing a generic framework for performance monitoring (PM) thresholds and statistics across various optical monitoring points. It exposes a threshold table (cerentGenericPmThresholdTable/cerentGenericPmThresholdEntry) defining monitor type, location, measurement period, and threshold value, alongside a current statistics table (cerentGenericPmStatsCurrentTable/cerentGenericPmStatsCurrentEntry) holding live performance counter values. Its monitoring value is centered on hardware performance status of optical interfaces: by comparing current PM statistics against configured thresholds (cerentGenericPmThresholdValue, cerentGenericPmThresholdOverFlowValue), an operator can detect degrading optical signal quality or error-rate excursions on a transport line before they cause a service-affecting outage. As a 'generic' framework, it is likely reused/extended by other Cerent/Cisco optical-specific PM MIBs (such as SONET/DWDM PM modules) that plug into its common threshold model. It is deployed on Cisco ONS 15xxx-series optical transport chassis in carrier and enterprise metro/long-haul optical networks. Engineers can download the CERENT-GENERIC-PM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CERENT-GENERIC-PM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco ONS optical transport platform (formerly Cerent)

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll cerentGenericPmThresholdTable/cerentGenericPmThresholdEntry to see the configured cerentGenericPmThresholdValue and cerentGenericPmThresholdPeriod for a given cerentGenericPmThresholdMonitorType at a specific cerentGenericPmThresholdLocation, then compare it against the live counter in cerentGenericPmStatsCurrentTable/cerentGenericPmStatsCurrentEntry. A current value exceeding cerentGenericPmThresholdValue (or the high-capacity cerentGenericPmThresholdHCValue) would indicate an optical line is experiencing excessive errors or signal degradation over the current 15-minute or daily interval, prompting further optical diagnostics.

What Can Be Monitored

  • performance monitoring threshold configuration
  • current PM statistic values
  • PM overflow/high-capacity counter values
  • monitor type and location per PM entry
