What Is CERENT-FC-MIB?

CERENT-FC-MIB is a Cisco MIB inherited from the Cerent optical transport product line (ONS series) for performance monitoring of Fibre Channel interfaces carried over Cisco/Cerent ONS SONET/SDH optical transport platforms. It exposes a Fibre Channel statistics table covering physical/link-layer error and event counters, such as invalid ordered sets, 8b/10b encoding/disparity errors, total input errors, and frames truncated or too long, each with a corresponding 64-bit "High" counter for high-speed interfaces. Its monitoring purpose is squarely hardware/link-quality health -- rising error counters on a Fibre Channel interface indicate a degrading optical link, dirty/damaged fiber connector, or SFP transceiver problem well before the link fully fails, making this MIB a key early-warning tool for SAN-over-optical-transport connectivity. It is layered on Cisco/Cerent's broader ONS optical transport MIB tree rather than a generic Fibre Channel standard MIB. It is deployed in Cisco ONS optical transport platforms carrying Fibre Channel SAN traffic across a metro/regional optical network, typically in data-center-interconnect or SAN-extension scenarios. Engineers can download the CERENT-FC-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Polling cFcStatsTable/cFcStatsEntry for cFcStatsInvalidOrdSets and cFcStatsEncodingDispErr (and their cFcStatsInvalidOrdSetsHigh/cFcStatsEncodingDispErrHigh companions on faster interfaces) reveals rising 8b/10b encoding errors that typically precede a full link failure, prompting proactive replacement of a suspect fiber or SFP. cFcStatsInTotalErr climbing alongside cFcStatsInFramesTrunc and cFcStatsInFramesTooLong points to a specific framing or buffering problem on the Fibre Channel link rather than a simple optical signal issue. A SAN administrator would trend these counters over time to catch intermittent link degradation before it causes SAN replication or storage I/O errors.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cFcStatsInvalidOrdSets OID:

Select a Cisco ONS optical transport platform (formerly Cerent) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cFcStatsInvalidOrdSets into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object gives the number of invalid ordered sets encountered on this interface. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
