Category: VLAN and Bridging, Vendor: Foundry/Brocade
Description: Manages VCS (Virtual Cluster Switching) fabric configuration and member switch status on Brocade switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is BROCADE-VCS-MIB?
BROCADE-VCS-MIB is Brocade's proprietary MIB for Virtual Cluster Switching (VCS), a technology where a set of interconnected Brocade VDX switches behaves as a single logical Layer 2 switch, operating in either fabric mode or logical chassis mode. It exposes fabric-level configuration and membership data describing how individual VDX switches participate in and are configured within the VCS cluster. It is used to monitor the software/cluster status of the fabric — such as which switches are members, the fabric's operating mode, and overall cluster consistency — which is critical for confirming that all nodes in the cluster are correctly joined and behaving as a unified switch. It builds on Brocade's broader per-switch system MIBs (such as BROCADE-SYSTEM-MIB) for individual chassis inventory, extending them with fabric-wide clustering semantics. It is deployed in Brocade VDX switch data-center fabrics using VCS for scale-out Ethernet fabric architectures, where BROCADE-VCS-MIB SNMP monitoring confirms every node remains a healthy fabric member.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BROCADE-VCS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Brocade VDX switch (VCS fabric member)
Monitoring Examples
No sample objects were provided for this module, so a specific OID-level example cannot be responsibly constructed. Conceptually, an administrator managing a VCS fabric would monitor fabric membership and mode objects to detect a VDX switch that has unexpectedly left the cluster or a mismatch between fabric mode and logical chassis mode configuration across members, either of which would indicate a fabric consistency problem.
What Can Be Monitored
- VCS fabric operating mode (fabric vs. logical chassis)
- member switch presence/membership status
- fabric consistency/health
