Category: Routing Protocols, VLAN and Bridging

Description: Configures bridge routing and maintains forwarding table entries for LAN switching devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BRS-MIB?

BRS-MIB is a legacy Proteon ("pro"-prefixed enterprise OID tree) MIB managing bridge routing service configuration on LAN switching devices, specifically per-port and per-class traffic forwarding settings. It exposes a port table with default class/priority assignment and a class table defining forwarding classes with allocation and byte-count objects. It is used for software-level traffic classification and accounting monitoring rather than physical hardware sensors -- proBrsClassBytes gives per-class traffic volume, letting an admin spot a misclassified or idle traffic path, while the port table confirms which fallback class and priority apply per port. It relies on Proteon's private enterprise OID structure (proteon, proAdmin, proFeature) and would typically be used alongside standard bridge/interface MIBs for port identity. It was deployed on legacy Proteon LAN bridge/router equipment supporting class-based traffic prioritization. Engineers can download the BRS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BRS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Proteon LAN bridge/router

Monitoring Examples

An admin polls proBrsClassTable (proBrsClassId, proBrsClassName, proBrsClassAlloc) to review how forwarding classes are defined, and proBrsClassBytes to track per-class traffic volume -- a class with unexpectedly high or zero byte counts suggests misclassification or a broken traffic path. proBrsPortTable (proBrsDefaultClassName, proBrsDefaultPriority) is checked to confirm the fallback class and priority assigned to each bridge port.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-class byte counters
  • class allocation settings
  • port default class and priority
  • number of defined bridge classes
