Description: Manages multicast flooding control and rate limiting on Avaya/Nortel BayStack ERS switch ports.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is BAY-STACK-MULTICAST-FLOODING-MIB?
BAY-STACK-MULTICAST-FLOODING-MIB is a Nortel/Avaya (originally Bay Networks) enterprise module controlling multicast flooding behavior and allowed-address filtering on BayStack ERS switch ports. Its data is configuration-oriented: a global enable flag for multicast flooding control, tables of allowed MAC and IP multicast addresses permitted to flood, and per-VLAN multicast flooding settings. As a monitoring aid it lets an admin verify that multicast flooding restrictions are correctly enforced -- confirming bsmfMulticastFloodingEnabled matches intent and that the bsmfAllowedAddressTable/bsmfAllowedInetAddressTable contain only expected addresses helps catch unauthorized multicast traffic or a misconfigured filter that is either blocking legitimate multicast streams or allowing unwanted flooding, with bsmfObjects notifications surfacing related faults. It builds on standard InetAddressType/InetAddress conventions for its IP-based table and complements the switch's core bridging/VLAN MIBs. It is deployed on Avaya/Nortel BayStack and Ethernet Routing Switch platforms in networks that need to control multicast flooding, such as IPTV or video distribution environments. Engineers can download the BAY-STACK-MULTICAST-FLOODING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BAY-STACK-MULTICAST-FLOODING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Avaya/Nortel BayStack and Ethernet Routing Switches
Monitoring Examples
An admin would check bsmfMulticastFloodingEnabled to confirm the global flooding-control feature is active, then walk bsmfAllowedAddressTable/bsmfAllowedAddressEntry for MAC-based entries (bsmfAllowedAddressMacAddr, bsmfAllowedAddressRowStatus) and bsmfAllowedInetAddressTable/bsmfAllowedInetAddressEntry for IP-based entries (bsmfAllowedInetAddressType, bsmfAllowedInetAddress) to verify only expected multicast destinations are permitted to flood. Reviewing bsmfVlanTable per-VLAN settings would reveal whether a specific VLAN has flooding control misconfigured, which could explain unexpected multicast traffic or a missing video stream on that VLAN. Notifications from bsmfObjects/bsmfNotifications would flag related configuration faults in real time.
What Can Be Monitored
- multicast flooding enabled state
- allowed MAC addresses for flooding
- allowed IP multicast addresses
- per-VLAN flooding configuration
- row status of address entries
