Category: Quality of Service, VLAN and Bridging, Vendor: Avaya

Description: Manages broadcast and multicast storm control thresholds and suppression on Avaya/Nortel ERS switch ports.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BAY-STACK-STORM-CONTROL-MIB?

BAY-STACK-STORM-CONTROL-MIB manages broadcast, multicast, and unicast storm control suppression on Avaya/Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch ports. It exposes per-port, per-traffic-type configuration objects covering enable state, high/low watermark thresholds, polling interval, trap interval, and the action to take when a threshold is crossed, alongside a scalar poll value. Monitoring this data lets an operator see whether a port is actively suppressing a traffic storm and how close current traffic levels are to the configured thresholds - directly indicating a software/configuration response to abnormal traffic conditions on the link. It functions as a vendor-specific extension layered alongside standard interface and bridge MIBs rather than replacing them. It is deployed on enterprise access switches to protect LAN segments from broadcast storms and loop-induced flooding. Engineers can download the BAY-STACK-STORM-CONTROL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BAY-STACK-STORM-CONTROL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Avaya/Nortel Ethernet Routing Switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator checks bsStormControlTable/bsStormControlEntry for a port's bsStormControlTrafficType, bsStormControlHighWatermark, and bsStormControlActionType settings. A port repeatedly generating entries in bsStormControlNotifications because its measured traffic (via bsStormControlPollValue) exceeds bsStormControlHighWatermark indicates a broadcast storm or loop on that segment, triggering the configured suppression action such as a port shutdown.

What Can Be Monitored

  • storm control enabled state
  • monitored traffic type
  • high/low watermark thresholds
  • poll interval
  • configured action on threshold breach
  • storm notifications
