What Is XYLAN-HREX-MIB?
XYLAN-HREX-MIB is a Xylan (OmniSwitch, later Alcatel) enterprise MIB extending host-resource-style monitoring with switch-internal register, hashing, and packet-forwarding statistics. It exposes a register configuration table alongside IP and IPX packet counters (received, forwarded, discarded) and CAM/hash-table utilization figures. This MIB is used heavily to monitor hardware resource utilization and forwarding-plane health on the switch: administrators track packet discard counts to spot forwarding problems, and watch the pseudo-CAM hash total to see whether the switch's internal lookup hash table is nearing capacity. It is a Xylan-proprietary extension that complements, rather than replaces, the standard Host Resources MIB and Interfaces MIB on the same chassis. It is deployed on Xylan/Alcatel OmniSwitch chassis where administrators need visibility into internal forwarding-table and hashing resource consumption alongside standard interface counters. Engineers can download the XYLAN-HREX-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in XYLAN-HREX-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Xylan/Alcatel OmniSwitch chassis
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll xylanHrexIpPacketsDiscarded and xylanHrexIpxPacketsDiscarded to detect a rising drop rate, then check xylanHrexPseudoCamHashTotal alongside xylanHrexHash utilization figures to confirm whether the drops stem from a full or overloaded internal hash/CAM table. The xylanHrexRegisterTable (xylanHrexRegisterEntry, indexed by xylanHrexRegisterNumber) with its xylanHrexRegisterAllowType and xylanHrexRegisterUseType objects lets an operator confirm which internal hardware registers are allocated and for what purpose. Comparing xylanHrexIpPacketsReceived against xylanHrexIpPacketsForwarded over time reveals the switch's forwarding efficiency for IP traffic.
What Can Be Monitored
- IP/IPX packets received, forwarded, discarded
- CAM/hash table utilization
- internal register allocation and usage type
- forwarding-plane resource utilization
